Utrecht is a beautiful old city in the center of the Netherlands. It is smaller than Amsterdam or Rotterdam, but bigger than a sleepy rural village. It has a lot to offer regarding culture, musea, shopping, food, nature and interesting architecture and buildings. And sightseeing is hard work so every now and then a coffee break or a lunch is a good idea. At Bar Beton you can have a nice coffee, cake, lunch and even a glass of wine or a beer. The Korte Jansstraat where you find Bar Beton and it’s little sister next door Bar Beton Café is on the doorstep to the famous Dom Church and Tower, and also close to Oude Gracht, Nieuwe Gracht, Jans Kerkhof and Neude. Today I will share my coffee and cake experience here with you, in a photo report.
Bar Beton Utrecht offers coffee, tea, cakes, breakfast croissants, lunch and wine, beer and sundowner snacks.
When we were there it was around 10 in the morning so we decided to both go for a Latte Macchiato with a delicious piece of carrot cake to share. Coffee here is (very!) hot, so if you don’t like cold coffee this is the place for you. For me the coffee was even a bit too hot… I am impatience and I had to wait a few minutes…. But I realise it’s better for a place like this to serve hot coffee than not so warm coffee… Also, although the coffee was boiling hot it didn’t became bitter, so the beans were not burned.
The interior is quite fun.
And the views from inside to an old part of Utrecht are lovely.
Later, after my Latte Macchiato, I decided to work a bit on my laptop (free Wi-Fi zone and a special table for freelance workers so you won’t keep ‘normal’ tables occupied – very clever!) and have a green Jasmine tea. The almond style cookies with it are very old fashioned Dutch called ‘Jan Hagel’. The taste is close to speculaas but then slightly different. I love them!
Terrace outside on a sunny day.
The old details of the building give character; for example this old winding staircase towards the basement where you find the toilets.
