In the heart of Cape Town, Buitenkant Street, just around the corner from Strand Street and The Grande Parade square, you can find the beautiful dark grey building from The Haas Collective. Coffee roastery, Coffee bar, Art & Design Collective and Advertisement Collective. What a cool place. By the way, Haas is Afrikaans or Dutch, and means hare. You know, that (fast) rabbit with the big ears.
The interior at Haas is a bit mysterious, I would say. Wood, dark colours, red details, a combination of old and modern furniture, a lot of art, design and paintings.. Some ceramic items which are for sale, a showcase full of trinkets.. The interior and the items for sale are not my personal taste. But I like that it’s there! It’s something different, something of its own. More unique than ‘just another new coffee spot on the block’.
The industrial lights above the bar, together with a good collection whiskeys, craft beers and other bottles of booze behind the bar, is nicely done! At Haas they roast and ground their own coffee beans, which come from all over the world! For example from Indonesia, Brasil, Colombia, Guatemala or Ethiopia. Besides drinking a coffee, you can order also breakfast, lunch and baked sweets.
The coffee is delicious at Haas, but I was disappointed with this chocolate biscuit cake. It looked so good but it tasted so bad. Cheap, not ‘real’ chocolate, no nice butter-flavoured biscuits. This was a miss! ‘Cheerless calories’, as the Other Half and me call food what isn’t worth the work-out later. So we didn’t finish the cake. Never mind. This was the only thing eatable we tried here, so maybe the cheesecake or the lunch sandwiches are delicious. The coffee was, so there is a reason to come back here soon, and try something else from their menu.
