5 places to stay when in Franschhoek, South Africa

When you are on holiday or getaway it is great to stay in a nice place. It’s not the most important, I think. But having said that, it makes your trip more comfortable and relaxt. Today I will give you 5 tips for accommodation in the heart of the Cape Winelands; Franschhoek.

Avondrood Guest House

Okay okay, I am not totally impartial with this one, as we owned Avondrood for a few years since 2011, when we arrived in South Africa. The nicest thing about Avondrood is the atmosphere; the old Victorian building with the modern and comfortable (spacious!) rooms and living room. The fire in winter and the stunning garden with swimming pool during summer. It truly is the perfect place to relax when you are eating and drinking your way around in the Cape Winelands. It was a great experience and I liked to welcome all the guests from all over the world, but also locals from South Africa, and make sure they have a good time in Franschhoek. After we sold it again a family from Cape Town took over, with their daily manager Justin. He is such a nice man! So: still a gem, two more rooms in the garden, what made the garden slightly smaller, but these new rooms are beautiful.

Plumwood inn

Another guest house in the village; Plumwood inn. Owners Roel and Lucienne spoil their guests already for over 15 years with their delicious breakfasts and great rooms. The service is personal and warm here. You feel at home from the moment you walk in. If you like swimming and sunbathing this is a great place, too. And the owners have good contact with restaurants and wineries, so if you know in advance where to dine or lunch, let them reserve a table for you.

the Garden House

A beautiful small 1-room guest cottage next to the owner’s house, in De Wet Street, a street quite high up the streets of Franschhoek, so with the best views. Sunsets are magnificent, and breakfast with a view is amazing. The guest cottage is private, spacious and comfortable. Your own coffee and tea facilities, small terrace, bathroom and bedroom. If you like dogs and cats this is the best place to stay in town! The owners, Annette and Barry, love animals and support with part of the guest house income the SPCA; the local charity organisation fighting animal cruelty, finding new homes for rescue dogs and cats and, most important: sterilisation programme for both dogs and cats.

Leeu Estates, Leeu Collection

If you win the lottery or have something very very special to celebrate, have a look at Leeu. The ultimate five star luxury retreat, on the most beautiful, peaceful location of Franschhoek; Dassenberg Road. It’s very luxury, very exclusive, lots of facilities (Spa, Gym, a restaurant, wine tasting area, shuttle service etc) but maybe a bit impersonal. But it’s without a doubt a fantastic hotel, with class and style. And lots of art!

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is a cute, characteristic guest house in the heart of Franschhoek, just behind the Main Road with all it’s shops and coffee and lunch places. It has 9 rooms, a garden with swimming pool, a lounge area and outside terrace. What I like about the Alchemist is the old, colonial style, with antique cupboards and  combined with fresh crisp bed linen, black and white walls, and an overall relaxed feeling. It’s well renovated in 2014 and I think you probably will like it!
